A couple of months ago we have published an article about the fit of Kriega OS-18 bags on a BMW F900GS. Back then, dedicated BMW GS OS-Base wasn't available so we used trusty T700 OS-Base which proved to work exceptionally well. Since then, we've gotten our hands on BMW GS OS-Base and decided to test it with OS-12 bags.
900GS has a really slim rear end which offers little in terms of side support for bags. In stock trim the bags have nothing to sit on and will not be stable. To overcome this issue, we have designed Rack-less supports, simple brackets which bolt onto our Top luggage rack.
These rack-less supports greatly improve fit of the bags, to the point where Kriega is recommending their use with BMW GS OS-Base.
Upper straps of the OS-base attach to our Luggage rack. Angle of the slot which is used for straps has been tweaked to provide the best possible fit.
Mounted like this, OS-base buckles are resting on the front edge of our rack - see the image below. Buckles are not under any vertical load so I don't see this as a longevity or reliability issue. However, you can expect the powder coating of the rack to be damaged at those points.
To round off the installation, lower straps are attached to our Tie-down brackets. It's certainly possible to use stock passenger footrest brackets for this purpose, but tie-down brackets offer sleeker looks and some weight savings.
One of the neat features on the BMW GS OS-base are diagonal straps. These help stabilize upper part of the bags (not really noticeable with OS-12 bags as they sit almost entirely below the seat line). Set-up like this, the bags fit snugly to the bike. Bouncing is kept to a minimum.
BMW GS OS-Base is a bit wider than the other bases we have tried so bags sit lower. RHS bag sits barely above the silencer. I would recommend to use a heat shield in this scenario, even though we tested the bags without one.
Some additional photos from different angles, to give you a better idea how this setup looks on the 900GS.
Mounted with our rack-less supports and luggage rack, the Kriega OS-12 bags fit the BMW F900GS securely and cleanly. The bags stay stable, bouncing is minimal, and the whole setup integrates neatly with the slim tail of the bike.
For riders looking for a reliable BMW F900GS rackless luggage solution, this setup delivers.
