790/890/1X90 Top luggage rack on KTM 790 Adventure R - brief overview

Perun moto KTM 790/890/1X90 Top luggage rack is our most versatile rack. This rack fits perfectly on 790/890 Adventure and Adventure R bikes and it can be used with various soft luggage or hard top boxes, with or without OEM passenger grab handles, it supports Rotopax and so on. Here are some options.

1. Perun moto KTM 790/890/1X90 Top luggage rack on 790/890 Adventure R bike – mounting options

All 790/890 Adventure bikes are equipped with small OEM composite tail rack, mounted on top of OEM grab handles. This rack is small and provides very limited strapping points for soft luggage.

Rack – grab handles assembly is bolted into threads in steel subframe, using M8 bolts. Looking closely at the tail of of the bike, from side, we can see that bolts (purple lines) are not perpendicular to the tail of the bike (orange line).

We wanted to offer an option to mount our Top luggage rack in various positions, so it can be perfectly adjusted to different needs.

A. Perun moto rack and OEM grab handles

First option is to mount our Top luggage rack on top of OEM grab handles. Since our rack is flat, unlike cast OEM composite rack, and since top surface of the rack must be perpendicular to the bolts, spacers are added between OEM grab handles and OEM top rack, raising the front of the rack a bit. This way, top surface of the rack is almost parallel to the ground, which is great if you plan to carry top luggage rack or some larger duffle bag.

B. Perun moto rack without OEM grab handles – using additional spacers

For riders who want to eliminate OEM grab handles, we include additional set of spacers with each rack. Those spacers are used instead of OEM grab handles and Perun moto rack is bolted on top of them. Again, top surface of the rack is almost perpendicular to the ground.

C. Perun moto rack without OEM grab handles – using optional Subplate

Finally, we offer optional 790/890 specific Subplate. It is a two-piece stainless steel bracket. It mounts to the bike, and rack is bolted to it – it acts as intermediary bracket, connecting Top luggage rack and bike. Instructions can be found HERE.

So, Subplate bolts to the bike and rack bolts to the Subplate.

What it does? It puts Top luggage rack at an angle, so it is not perpendicular with the mounting bolts anymore. This lowers front part of the rack for approx. 20 mm. It may not seem much, but it is noticeable. This way, top surface of the rack is flush with the seat and at the same angle.

2. Brief overview of Perun moto KTM 790/890/1X90 Top luggage rack

With our Top luggage rack, we wanted to add much needed versatility to carrying capacity of these bikes.

First goal was to add enough strapping points for various duffle bags and rack-less systems. With approx. 30 cm (L) x 29 cm (W) and slots all over perimeter, all sorts of 25-30-liter bags can be strapped easily. Even larger bags, 40-50-liters, can be safely mounted, but sides of the bag will overhang a bit. We added slots in the middle too, so smaller bags can be safely mounted too, in several positions. All these slots make mounting of rack-less bags a breeze.

Of course, like on all our racks, edges are chamfered and smooth, so straps last much longer.

Second goal was to enable mounting of top cases. There are predrilled holes for Givi, SW-Motech and Shad adapter kits. There is no need for additional mounting plate, just bolt hardware from one of these adapter kits to the pre-drilled holes and top case is mounted directly to our Top luggage rack. This way, top case is mounted low and it’s very secure – vibrations are minimized.

Third goal was to make it strong enough so it can be used to grab the bike and pick it up from the ground. To achieve that we used 6 mm aluminum, with side flanges adding stiffness. To keep weight low, there are large cut outs in the middle part of the rack.

Fourth goal was to enable mounting of Rotopax cans. There are predrilled holes for Rotopax mount, so adding 1 or 1.75-gallon Rotopax can is easy.

3. Perun moto 790/890/1X90 Top luggage rack and Rotopax

Carrying Rotopax fuel or water can is easy, as there are pre-drilled holes for Rotpax mount. Here is 1 gallon can on the bike, but 1.75-gallon cans can also be easily mounted.

Rotopax can be mounted in two positions, more to the front or more to the back.

Rotopax can be installed even if rack is mounted using Subplate.

4. Perun moto KTM 790/890/1X90 Top luggage rack and top case

Various top cases can be mounted directly on our rack, using Givi/Kapa, SW-Motech or Shad adapter kits. Hardware from the kits is bolted into pre-drilled holes and top case can be fixed directly to the rack, without intermediary plates. This way, top case is very secure and vibrations are minimal.

This is SW Motech 38 liter top case.

When rack is mounted with OEM grab handles, or without OEM grab handles but with additional spacers, top case is almost perpendicular to the ground. This is good as there is more room for pillion.

When rack is mounted using Suplate, top case leans forward a bit.
